As winter sets in across Sydney, it’s important not to overlook how the colder weather can impact your eyes. At New Eyes Optometrists, we’re seeing more patients with seasonal eye discomfort—so here’s what to watch out for and how you can protect your vision during the chilly months.
1. Is Blue Light Really the Problem?
Many people come to us worried about blue light from screens. But research shows that digital eye strain is more often caused by prolonged screen time and poor posture, not the blue light itself.
Tip: Follow the 20-20-20 rule—every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 6 metres away. This simple habit can ease tired eyes.
If you’re still experiencing symptoms, book an eye exam. We can check for other underlying issues and suggest personalised solutions.
2. Watery Eyes in Winter?
It might seem odd to have watery eyes in dry, cold weather—but it’s actually quite common. Windy conditions and indoor heating can dry out the eye’s surface, triggering excessive tearing as a reflex. Allergies to dust and mould (which often flare up in winter) can also cause similar symptoms.
What you can do: If your eyes are frequently tearing up, we recommend an assessment. Treatment might include eye drops, lifestyle changes, or updated eyewear.
3. Winter Light Sensitivity (Photophobia)
While we often associate light sensitivity with summer, it can also affect people in winter. Glare from wet roads or reflective surfaces, harsh indoor lighting, or underlying issues like dry eye or migraines may be to blame.
People with light-coloured eyes are especially prone, due to lower pigment levels.
How to manage it: Sunglasses with UV protection, photochromic lenses, and adjusting indoor lighting can make a big difference. Persistent symptoms should be checked by an optometrist.
4. Use Your Optical Extras Before They Expire!
Some health funds like AHM, Defence Health, and Navy Health reset their optical extras on 1 July. If you’re with one of these providers, your unused benefits will expire on 30 June.
