Ortho-K (orthokeratology) lenses work overnight to gently reshape the cornea, slowing the progression of nearsightedness (myopia) while providing clear vision throughout the day. Much like dental braces guide teeth into alignment, these custom designed contact lenses mold the eye’s surface to provide corrected eyesight.
Poor vision can make it harder for children to keep up in school, stay confident in social settings, and fully participate in sports and other activities. As myopia advances, it also increases the lifelong risk of serious eye diseases such as retinal detachment, glaucoma, and myopic maculopathy – eye problems that can lead to permanent vision loss. Ortho-K lenses work by minimizing the stimulus for myopic progression of young eyes.
“Dr John Boulos is kind and I have always felt comfortable to talk through with him any thoughts or concerns. He is incredibly thorough and understanding, he also explains every process so you can understand why it is important and what will happen.”

What causes myopia, and how is it diagnosed?
Myopia happens when a child’s eyeball misdevelops into an elongated shape, causing blurry distance vision. Genetics, excessive close focus (e.g. digital screens), and limited outdoor activity can contribute. We can diagnose it through a comprehensive eye exam, which measures vision clarity and eye shape. The earlier myopia is detected, the more effective intervention strategies can be.
How quickly does Ortho-K start working?
Pretty fast! Some kids wake up with noticeably clearer vision after just one night, while others take a few days or weeks to get the full effect. It really depends on their prescription and how consistently they wear the lenses.
What happens if my child stops wearing Ortho-K lenses?
No worries—if they stop using Ortho-K, their eyes will slowly go back to how they were before. Within a few days or weeks, their vision will return to their original prescription. Unlike surgery, there’s nothing permanent about Ortho-K, so you always have the option to stop if needed.
Are the lenses comfortable, and can my child handle them independently?
After a few nights, most kids don’t even notice them. Since they’re only worn while sleeping, they avoid the dryness and irritation that can come with daytime contact lenses. Most kids get the hang of putting them in and taking them out pretty quickly, but younger ones might need a little help at first. Proper hygiene and handling are important for success.
Why do Ortho-K lenses cost more than other contact lenses?
Ortho-K lenses are custom-designed for each eye and made with advanced technology to gently reshape the cornea. Unlike mass-produced soft contacts, they are designed to last up to two years, making them a long-term investment in clear eyesight and healthy vision.
Is Ortho-K more beneficial than standard prescription glasses?
Standard prescription glasses just help your child see clearly (for the moment). But they also don’t do anything to slow down myopic progression. That’s why treatments like Ortho-K are often recommended to provide clear vision in the short term PLUS delivering all the lifetime benefits of reduced myopia while intervention is still possible.
