Ortho-K, short for orthokeratology, is a popular vision correction method that allows you to go without glasses or contact lenses during the day. By wearing custom designed lenses overnight, your cornea is gently reshaped, enabling clear, natural vision.
This simple and effective approach is primarily used to correct myopia (nearsightedness) but can also help with hyperopia, astigmatism, and even presbyopia. It offers a great alternative for adults who want freedom from daytime eyewear but aren’t ready for LASIK or other surgical procedures.
“Dr John Boulos is kind and I have always felt comfortable to talk through with him any thoughts or concerns. He is incredibly thorough and understanding, he also explains every process so you can understand why it is important and what will happen.”
BONUS: Free pair of adult Polaroid sunglasses for all Ortho-K patients who book before FEBRUARY 28th, 2025. Why not come in for a consultation to learn more?
Why are Ortho-K lenses great for active people?
Most of us who enjoy sports and exercise know that glasses can often get in the way. But even regular contact lenses have some limitations. They can pop out or become misaligned. For swimmers, contact lenses also run the risk of serious water-borne infections, even in clorinated pools. Ortho-K contact lenses are a game-changer, because you only wear them at home, while sleeping.
What other benefits does orthokeratology have over traditional contact lenses?
Many women who are experienced contact lenses wearers will know the frustrations of wearing and applying eye make-up while also keeping the lenses clean. Getting mascara on your lenses can lead to irritated, red eyes. Ortho-k makes that a thing of the past. You take out your lenses when you get up in the morning, before you begin your makeup routine.
Can Ortho-K lenses remove the need for reading glasses?
Yes! Most of us will need some kind of vision assistance for focussing on close objects after the age of 40. This is a condition known as presbyopia and it is caused by the natural loss of flexibility in the lens of the eye. Orthokeratology has the ability to correct the shape of the cornea to compensate for that. The lens design has a peripheral plus power that allows the wearer clear vision at both distance and near.
Are Ortho-K lenses suitable for people with dry eyes?
Absolutely! Dry eyes are a condition that affect more people every year for a variety of reasons. When you are in a windy, dusty or sandy environment, traditional contact lenses can be a challenge. Ortho-K is a great alternative. Take your lenses out in the morning and enjoy your time at the beach!
Why do Ortho-K lenses cost more than standard contacts?
As a patient you will receive a custom made pair of lenses, made by a laboratory specifically for your corneas. These are not “off-the-shelf” vision solutions. Also, each pair is designed to last up to two years, with proper care and use. This makes the cost of Ortho-K lenses comparable with daily disposable contact lenses in the long run.
Are there any side effects of orthokeratology?
One of the great advantages of Ortho-K lenses is that if you decide they really AREN’T for you, your eyes return to their “natural” state just a few days after you stop using them. Unlike LASIK surgery, there is no invasive impact. With proper hygiene, usage and handling there should be no side affects for patients.
