Diabetic Eye disease

Reading the latest Macular Disease Foundation newsletter reveals some interesting facts.

  • Diabetic retinopathy, a sign of diabetes, is the leading cause of vision loss in working age Australians
  • It affects 300,000 to 400,000 Australians
  • The risk of retinopathy increases with the duration of diabetes
  • Almost every Type 1 diabetic and over 60% of Type 2 diabetics will experience vision loss within 20 years of diagnosis

With statistics as confronting as these, we recommend an annual eye exam with dilated pupils and a 3D OCT eye scan to monitor your eyes for early signs of retinopathy. The earlier we detect any changes, the better the outcome.

We recommend liaising with your diabetes educator, dietician, or GP to better understand the risk factors that impact your eye health. Simple changes in diet and lifestyle play a huge role in preventing vision loss from diabetic retinopathy.

The message is simple, have a regular eye exam as recommended by your doctor and optometrist to ensure any impact on your vision is minimised.

We look forward to seeing you in our clinic soon!
